Red-finned Blue-eye fish
Discovered 22 years ago this little Aussie fish lives only around Edgbaston in Queensland.
Threats: The Red-finned Blue-eye Fish is endangered because of the introduced species Gambusia which was brought in to control mosquitoes but has spread with flooding. What is being done to help? - 2008, Bush Heritage Australia a non profit conservation brought the area in which the fish lives, a recovery project has been started to save the population of Red-finned Blue-eye. - For the first 3 years removal of Gambusia was trialled and small populations of Red-finned Blue-eye was moved to safe homes free of the killer introduced species. - Today the work being done to help them includes, barriers to keep the Gambusia out of springs and a captive breeding agreement is being fought for with government agencies. |
Some might say why worry about a "stupid little fish" but if you were that little fish would you want to get no help because of your appearance and size??? Think about that.
